Microsoft Punishes Gamers With Massive Global Xbox Price Hikes
Gaming is about to get a lot more expensive. Just a few hours after Apple announced major price hikes across its hardware lineup, Microsoft followed suit. The tech giant revealed that Xbox consoles will soon see significant price jumps globally. To make matters worse for buyers looking for storage options, the company is completely killing off its 2TB model.
Starting August 1, players will have to shell out way more cash for a console. The basic 512GB models will cost an extra 100 dollars, while the roomier 1TB versions are going up by a massive 150 dollars.
The specific damage to your wallet depends on which machine you want to buy. The entry-level Xbox Series S 512GB model is jumping from 399 dollars to 499 dollars. If you want the Xbox Series S 1TB version, the price is climbing from 449 dollars up to 599 dollars. The premium tier is getting hit even harder. The Xbox Series X 1TB Digital edition will spike from 599 dollars to 750 dollars. Finally, the flagship Xbox Series X 1TB Disc model is going from 649 dollars to a staggering 800 dollars.
Microsoft blames these adjustments on the rising costs of memory and console storage manufacturing. Production costs have skyrocketed to more than two and a half times their previous levels. Microsoft previously warned the public that manufacturing pressures could cause retail prices to double by the fall of 2027. This latest move shows they are already acting on those fears. The decision is especially frustrating for consumers because it comes less than a year after Microsoft bumped up Xbox prices in the United States last October.
This global hardware spike aligns directly with Apple’s recent decisions regarding Macs and iPads. Both tech giants point to the same industry pressures. The sudden explosion of artificial intelligence has created an unprecedented demand for data centers and specialized AI infrastructure. Because massive technology corporations are pouring billions of dollars into building these AI systems, the demand for memory components and advanced storage chips has surged. This bottleneck is strangling the regular supply chain and pushing hardware assembly costs higher for everyday consumer electronics.
Microsoft is trying to soften the blow for angry gamers by highlighting flexible payment structures. They plan to expand access to lower-cost hardware options through alternative channels. In the official announcement, the company stated that it is currently working on new programs to offer refurbished and previously played consoles at lower prices.
Furthermore, if you purchase eligible Xbox hardware directly through official Microsoft Stores, you will get better access to buy now, pay later financial plans. Amazon shoppers can also qualify for up to 12 months of 0% APR financing on eligible console purchases to help spread out the cost.
Microsoft is not alone in making gaming a luxury hobby. They join Sony, which already asks players to pay much more for the PS5 Digital edition than they did at launch. Nintendo also raised prices modestly for its Switch 2 console, though industry experts think the Mario maker might face intense pressure to hike prices even further in the coming months. As shown in the TechCrunch article layout in image_d8afd8.jpg, the era of affordable console gaming is officially over.
