Setting the Trap: How to Make Google’s New Proactive Bots Do Your Digging
Google is aggressively pulling the plug on traditional search as we know it. At the Google I/O 2026 keynote, the tech giant pulled back the curtain on its new agentic capabilities in Search. Instead of forcing you to hunt down answers one query at a time, this system lets you build, customize, and deploy your own squad of background AI assistants. The launch is a massive piece of Google’s pivot toward continuous, proactive AI systems that take real initiative instead of just sitting around waiting for you to type a keyword.
Unlike older search engines that only wake up when you press enter, Google’s new information agents operate continuously behind the scenes. They run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, monitoring the internet to keep you updated on your hyper-specific interests. This completely eliminates the need to manually refresh the same pages every morning. In a lot of ways, these tools represent the ultimate evolution of Google Alerts, a notification feature that the company first launched way back in 2003. But these new agents go far beyond sending a basic email link.
Deploying Your Digital Bloodhounds
Instead of dropping a disorganized list of links on your screen, these information agents synthesize live data from multiple distinct sources. They explain why changes matter, compare different viewpoints, and deliver actionable summaries. For example, if you are tracking a specific stock or financial trend, an information agent can monitor corporate filings, chart stock price movements, and watch for economic shifts all day long. The moment a major breaking event occurs, the agent summarizes the earnings report, flags the news, and sends a direct update with links to dive deeper.
The setup is also incredibly useful for managing everyday chores. You can use it to track flight prices for a vacation, follow sports teams, track regional housing markets, or monitor job openings. To get an agent running, you simply open the new AI Mode in Google Search and type a casual instruction.
For instance, you can tell the search bar: “Keep me updated on movie tickets for the upcoming science fiction blockbuster.” The moment tickets go on sale, the Google app fires a push notification straight to your phone. You can track, refine, or terminate your active agents at any time by opening your history tab inside AI Mode.
The Big Upgrade for Power Users
Google plans to launch these advanced information agents this summer. The company will initially roll out the features to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States before expanding access to international markets later in the year.
Alongside these continuous bots, Google also introduced its biggest layout redesign in over 25 years. The platform replaced the old search engine framework with an intelligent, expandable search box. This updated interface natively handles much longer, highly conversational questions. It also features an updated query suggestion system that avoids simple autocomplete predictions. Instead, it helps you build nuanced, context-aware prompts using files, images, or tabs. Google is making a definitive bet that the future of the web belongs to proactive AI assistants that work for you while your screen is off.
