Global Monetization Push: Google Expands AI Search Ads International Footprint as Core Growth Decelerates
Google is bringing sponsored listings and commercial ads directly into its international AI-powered Search experiences, betting that conversational discovery can open fresh revenue channels even as traditional advertising growth slows down. Parent company Alphabet announced the global rollout alongside its third-quarter financial results, reporting overall quarterly revenue of $127.6 billion. While total revenue rose 25 percent year over year, expansion across core search advertising continued to cool down, causing Alphabet stock to drop 8 percent following the earnings presentation.
Google Search revenue grew 12 percent year over year during the third quarter, dropping from 17 percent growth in the second quarter and 19 percent in the first quarter. This steady deceleration increases pressure on Google product teams to turn expanding generative features into reliable revenue streams. Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief business officer, explained that the company is actively scaling commercial ads inside AI Overviews and dedicated AI Mode setups for users worldwide. The expanded deployment introduces multi-turn conversation ads and AI Mode commercial placements to international audiences while bringing expanded formats to U.S. users.
Early metrics indicate that users engage with commercial listings inside conversational formats at rates comparable to traditional search results. Schindler noted that click-through rates for sponsored product listings inside AI Mode match standard organic result metrics, with internal user research confirming that searchers find the contextual ad recommendations helpful. The global ad expansion builds on conversational ad formats launched earlier this year, which integrate sponsored products and follow-up query recommendations directly into generative answers.
Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai highlighted that overall search query volume reached its fastest year-over-year growth rate in five years. He credited generative features with changing search habits, encouraging users to ask longer, more detailed questions across multiple formats. Queries submitted inside AI Mode average three times longer than traditional text searches, with one in five AI Mode queries incorporating voice inputs, images, or document uploads. Additionally, Google processes over 50 billion visual search queries every month through its camera and lens platforms.
Pichai emphasized that conversational features allow Google to bring practical software helper tools to more people globally than any other digital product. Users submit highly personalized, multimodal queries that require nuanced contextual responses rather than simple website link lists. Within Alphabet’s financial statements, the Google Services division, which houses core Search operations, generated $96.3 billion in quarterly revenue. Meanwhile, Google Cloud revenue surged 103 percent year over year to reach $30.7 billion.
The monetization push capped a busy operational stretch for Google’s engineering groups. Recent product milestones include rolling out the Gemini 4 Argon model, expanding the active Gemini mobile application user base past one billion monthly active users, and launching the Pixel 11 flagship smartphone line. Integrating commercial ad placements directly into AI Overviews ensures that Google can monetize rising conversational query volumes while maintaining its dominant share of global search traffic.
