Acquisition Ambush: Listen Labs Kills $1.5 Billion Funding Round for Salesforce Buyout Talks

Market research startup Listen Labs recently walked away from a signed term sheet for a 125 million dollar Series C funding round at a 1.5 billion dollar valuation. Menlo Ventures originally set out to lead the financing round before negotiations broke down.

Walking away after signing a formal term sheet happens rarely in venture capital circles, as industry investors generally look down on breaking preliminary funding agreements. Sources familiar with the situation indicate the funding deal fell through because Salesforce opened direct acquisition talks to buy Listen Labs for roughly 2 billion dollars.

Listen Labs leads a fast-growing niche that automates customer research interviews using voice agents. The three-year-old company generates about 30 million dollars in annualized revenue. That performance tops competing startup Simile, which predicts human behavior and recently secured a 200 million dollar Series B round at a 2 billion dollar valuation led by Greenoaks.

If acquisition discussions with Salesforce collapse, venture capitalists expect Listen Labs to return to open funding markets seeking a valuation of 2 billion dollars or higher.

Buying Listen Labs would boost Salesforce’s automated intelligence capabilities by adding software models that analyze customer feedback. However, corporate negotiators at Salesforce may decide that paying a 67-times revenue multiple sets too steep a price tag for an early-stage acquisition.

Florian Jüngermann, a former German competitive programming champion, co-founded Listen Labs in 2023 alongside Alfred Wahlforss, founder of staffing startup Bemlo. The pair originally met while completing master’s degrees at Harvard.

Listen Labs builds software that generates survey questions, conducts automated audio or video customer interviews, and compiles findings into slide decks matching traditional human research reports. Fortune 500 corporations rely heavily on consumer interviews to track brand feedback, but traditional human agency research remains expensive and takes weeks to finish.

Automating qualitative user research cuts production costs and accelerates delivery timelines. Companies can run customer feedback cycles quickly, tracking real-time consumer reactions to fresh product updates. Major clients using Listen Labs include Microsoft, Canva, Anthropic, and Sweetgreen.

Other rivals operating in the automated research space include Outset, Kepla, and Aaru. While platforms like Listen Labs and Outset conduct interviews with real human consumers, competitors like Aaru and Simile create synthetic consumer models to predict user choices without interviewing real people.

Listen Labs previously held a 500 million dollar valuation after raising a 69 million dollar Series B round in late January. That previous round was led by Ribbit Capital, with participation from Sequoia Capital, Conviction, and Pear VC.

Switching from a private funding round to direct buyout talks shows how eagerly legacy cloud platforms want automated research tools. Adding automated interview systems to enterprise software packages helps corporate teams gather market insights instantly, skipping slow external agency research projects.
