Blueprint Boundaries: Figma Launches Spec Editor and Code Layers to Control AI Design Agents
Design platform Figma launched a suite of markdown editing tools and system integrations to standardize how software agents interact with digital design files. Announced during the company’s first Config event in India, the updates introduce Figma Specs, an integrated markdown editor that helps teams define core design rules, brand guidelines, and UI component behavior in a central space. The new tools give both human teams and third-party AI agents clear parameters to follow, ensuring automated features adhere strictly to brand design systems during automated generation tasks.
Figma Specs operates as a standalone document inside Figma or directly within the visual design canvas. Designers can link text specifications directly to canvas elements, FigJam diagrams, code layers, and UI components. The editor acts as an authoritative reference manual for autonomous agents. Instead of relying on open-ended prompts, software agents reference Figma Specs to check color tokens, typography rules, layout grids, and spacing constraints before modifying UI layouts or outputting front-end code.
Alongside the spec editor, Figma opened its canvas agent and code layer features to a broader public beta. The code layers tool adds live programming capabilities directly to canvas design elements, making interactive prototyping faster for product teams. Designers can prompt the canvas agent to convert static vector layouts into functioning code or modify specific interactive components on the fly. Providing clear guidelines and structured specs helps control non-deterministic AI generation, guiding agents toward reliable, predictable design outcomes.
Figma Chief Design Officer Loredana Crisan highlighted that software development patterns shifted heavily toward rapid AI code generation. She noted that developers produce roughly 17 times more code today than in previous years, yet actual product release rates only increased by 1.3 times. Much of that generated code serves as temporary exploration material built to test ideas rather than production-ready software. Establishing clear design specifications inside Figma helps teams bridge the gap between quick code generation and actual product releases.
To expand platform interoperability, Figma added support for over 20 new developer tools using its Model Context Protocol (MCP) framework. Supported integrations now include Open Code, Cursor, Dox, and Indian AI startup Sarvam. Additionally, Figma integrated open-source headless CMS Payload directly into its Figma Make product, allowing teams to manage dynamic website content and UI design simultaneously. Downloads for Payload grew sixfold over the past year following Figma’s acquisition of the open-source platform.
Hosting Config in India reflects rapid user growth across the region. India represents Figma’s largest international user market outside the United States, with 40 percent of India’s top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange relying on Figma for software product design. Establishing local sales, partnership, and product support teams in India positions Figma to capture growing enterprise software demand across emerging technology hubs.
Setting strict structural boundaries for autonomous design agents solves a major pain point in digital product management. Uncontrolled AI generation often creates inconsistent UI components, broken spacing, and off-brand code outputs that require heavy manual cleanup. Centralizing design rules inside Figma Specs ensures that autonomous agents write clean code, respect established design libraries, and accelerate digital product development without compromising visual quality.
