Breaking the Silos: Google Connects AI Mode Directly to Your Favorite Everyday Apps

Google just gave its conversational search platform a massive upgrade that bridges the gap between searching for info and actually getting things done. The tech giant announced on Thursday that users can now link and interact with a select group of popular external applications directly inside AI Mode. When the update rolls out, the system will instantly support connections to Instacart, Canva, and YouTube.

This fresh software update pushes AI Mode far beyond simply answering basic text questions. Google wants you to complete multi-step tasks inside the programs you already use every day. By tying these tools together, the company hopes people will open AI Mode much more often to plan their schedules, sketch out designs, and handle their weekly shopping trips. The strategic move also positions Google to compete directly with rivals like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, which both offer their own ecosystems of application plugins and integrations.

The real-world examples show how much smoother this makes your digital chores. If you tell the assistant that you want to host a weekend barbecue, you do not just get a list of recipes. You can connect your personal Instacart account right inside the chat window. The AI will instantly gather all the required ingredients, dump them into your digital shopping cart, and let you check out without ever opening the separate Instacart app or website.

The software works just as smoothly for creative projects. If you are building a new marketing flyer and need inspiration, you can call up Canva in the chat to look through a custom selection of design templates. For music lovers, you can ask the assistant to build a custom playlist for your next social gathering and instantly save the music track straight into your YouTube Music library.

The update is currently rolling out to users across the United States. Google confirmed it is actively working with a wide range of new development partners to add support for more applications very soon. Today’s launch builds upon early software frameworks that Google previewed at its annual developer conference, where it showed off tools to connect third-party systems directly to its Gemini engine. That early system supported basics with OpenTable, Spark, and Instacart.

Google has steadily upgraded the platform since its initial debut back in early 2025. The engineering team previously added a localized feature that checks if a specific product is currently in stock at a nearby retail store. They also rolled out a side-by-side web browsing view, allowing users to compare complex details and ask follow-up questions while keeping the original context of their web search active. Earlier this year, Google also deployed a personalized intelligence layer that reads your Gmail inbox and Google Photos library to provide highly customized, individual responses to your daily prompts.
