Constant Companion: Ex-Plaud Exec Secures $26M to Launch Ambient AI Tool Ambi

Former Plaud executive Harrison Harrison announced $26 million in funding across multiple investment rounds to build Ambi, an artificial intelligence app that listens continuously in the background to assist users throughout their day. Venture capital firm Lachy Groom led the round, with additional backing from legal giant Wilson Sonsini and original design manufacturer Foxconn. The fresh capital fuels software development and hardware design as the company scales its core platform.

Ambi releases software across iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch platforms. Users opt in to keep the app active continuously, allowing the background software to record conversations, track digital interactions, and build long-term context. Instead of making users wait for manual transcription uploads or post-meeting summary exports like older recording hardware, Ambi delivers real-time suggestions and contextual insights directly while conversations take place.

Co-founders Harrison Harrison and Chief Technology Officer Derek Cao built Ambi to move past passive audio recorders. The platform tracks user workflows across multiple devices, analyzing current project notes, open documents, and past conversations to surface helpful information automatically. The software can synthesize context across days or weeks, comparing meeting notes from earlier calls with active work items to highlight key action items or recurring topics.

Alongside its multi-device software application, Ambi is actively designing a standalone hardware device. Design sketches reveal a compact physical unit featuring a display screen, integrated speaker, digital camera, and microphone array. The standalone hardware device will capture live ambient data directly from a user’s physical desk space, expanding the platform’s visual and audio awareness beyond standard phone and computer software.

Continuous background recording raises significant privacy and consent concerns among consumers and privacy advocates. Previous ambient recording startups faced public pushback after recording third-party conversations without obtaining clear consent from all participants. Apple’s recent Apple Intelligence system updates drew similar scrutiny regarding background data collection and persistent mic access.

Ambi addresses data privacy by storing user data locally on personal devices rather than streaming raw recordings to remote cloud servers. The company encrypts local files and claims it does not save raw audio recordings of surrounding people. However, the software lacks physical recording indicators to alert surrounding individuals when the app is actively listening. Harrison acknowledged the industry-wide challenge, stating that Ambi encourages users to disclose the active software to others, though managing social disclosure rests primarily on individual users.

Ambi employs over 50 team members across offices in San Francisco, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. The startup continues hiring machine learning researchers, product managers, and speech recognition engineers to expand its real-time processing capabilities. Building ambient AI tools that operate smoothly in the background while respecting user privacy represents a major frontier for digital assistants, shaping how humans interact with contextual software across daily work routines.
