Setting up the selfie video feature takes less than a minute. Users look directly into their phone or computer camera and follow on-screen prompts to perform simple head movements. You might turn your head to the left, look to the right, or give a slight nod. These movements capture various angles of your face to create a reference profile. If you get locked out of your account later, you can record a fresh video. Google then compares the new footage against your saved initial setup video to verify your identity.
The hardest part of building this technology comes down to catching fraudsters, automated bots, and manipulated media. Google built multiple layers of anti-impersonation checks directly into the verification pipeline to stop people from holding up printed photos or playing deepfake videos in front of the lens. The system matches recorded video against your stored profile while forcing real-time liveness checks. Prompts require simple, unpredictable physical movements to confirm a live human is standing in front of the camera.
