Early Warning Engine: Healthleap Secures $38M to Flag Hidden Patient Risks Across Hospital Wards

Healthcare startup Healthleap raised $38 million in combined seed and Series A funding to expand its clinical software platform across hospital networks. The financial package includes an $8 million seed round co-led by Sequoia Capital and First Round Capital, alongside a $30 million Series A round led by Hummingbird Ventures. Founded in South Africa in 2022 by siblings Jemima and Josiah Meyer, the company analyzes electronic health records to spot overlooked medical conditions among admitted patients before minor complications become life-threatening emergencies.

Healthleap began as a specialized nutrition tool built by Jemima for hospital dietitians, but the founders quickly shifted focus after recognizing a far larger clinical gap. They expanded the system into a broad risk-detection platform designed to identify acute inpatient conditions like severe malnutrition, delirium, aspiration pneumonia, and pressure ulcers. These overlooked conditions frequently go undetected during initial ER triage, driving up hospital readmission rates, extending average stay durations, and complicating overall patient recovery.

Hospital charts contain two distinct categories of data: structured numerical entries like lab results, blood pressure readings, and vital signs, alongside unstructured clinical notes written directly by attending physicians. Healthleap CEO Josiah Meyer explained that critical early warning indicators usually hide inside those unstructured progress notes. Phrases noting poor appetite, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained weight loss offer early clues that a patient faces escalating health risks long before routine lab work reflects severe deterioration.

To catch these subtle warning signs, Healthleap connects directly into a health system’s electronic health record software and runs language models across every adult inpatient chart overnight. The software processes progress notes, intake forms, dietary orders, lab values, and active problem lists to construct an updated risk profile for each individual patient. Every morning, attending care teams receive a clear risk score inside their existing clinical dashboard, drawing direct attention to patients who require immediate specialist reviews or diagnostic workups.

Hospital malnutrition serves as a major primary focus for the platform. Research indicates that 20% to 50% of hospitalized patients suffer from malnutrition, yet fewer than 9% ever receive an official diagnosis during their stay. Traditional hospital screening relies on a basic two-question survey given upon admission, routinely missing intubated, sedated, or confused patients. Healthleap replaces that manual checklist with continuous record scanning, ensuring vulnerable patients receive targeted nutritional interventions early in their treatment plans.

Over the past year, Healthleap expanded its customer footprint from three regional facilities to more than 50 major hospital partners. Major health systems using the technology include Penn Medicine, Cedars-Sinai, Intermountain Health, Houston Methodist, and Emory Healthcare. At the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, deploying Healthleap’s malnutrition tracking tool yielded $23.8 million in annualized financial benefits by unlocking additional insurance reimbursements and shortening average patient stays.

Healthleap sells three-year enterprise software contracts priced according to a facility’s total bed count, offering outcome-based pricing models linked directly to verified financial returns. With $38 million in fresh capital, the startup plans to scale its engineering, product, and sales teams while expanding platform capabilities to screen for over 40 distinct medical conditions across inpatient, outpatient, and home care environments.
