Feature Massacre: Microsoft Streamlines Copilot by Axing Mico and Merging Separate Apps

Two years ago, Microsoft framed automated software tools as a major turning point in technology. Today, the tech giant is scaling back that scattered approach. The company is merging its consumer Copilot application directly with its business-focused Microsoft 365 Copilot app while quietly killing off several unpopular side features that failed to win over users.

GeekWire first reported the consolidation, which Microsoft later confirmed in its official support documentation. The company plans to roll all consumer and workplace tools into a single, unified Copilot app experience.

This shift shows that Microsoft realizes personal and professional workflows cross over constantly. Splitting its software features across multiple apps made the user experience far too complicated. Streamlining everything into one hub gives Microsoft a better shot at competing against direct rivals like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.

Other major software labs are making similar adjustments. Anthropic recently merged its Cowork tool directly into Claude Chat. OpenAI added its Operator agent features straight into ChatGPT. Google also continues folding deep research and browsing capabilities directly into its primary Gemini mobile app.

As part of this housecleaning, Microsoft is dropping several underperforming tools. Everyday consumers will lose access to Copilot Group Chats, automated podcast generation, and experimental tools sitting inside Copilot Labs. The company will also pull Deep Research features from the main consumer app by August 18, 2026. However, paying professional subscribers will gain access to a replacement tool named Researcher to handle heavy data gathering.

Microsoft is also ditching its goofy animated mascot named Mico. The character appeared as a floating orange blob designed to act as an friendly assistant, reminiscent of an updated Clippy. Users found the mascot unnecessary, leading Microsoft to wipe it from the interface entirely.

During this migration period, Microsoft warned that certain features might vanish temporarily. Files created inside the standalone Copilot app will automatically move over to users’ personal OneDrive storage accounts so nothing gets lost in the transition.

In an internal memo leaked to The Information, Microsoft Executive Vice President Jacob Andreou addressed the changes directly with staff. He explained that Copilot needs to earn its spot on user devices by offering clear daily value, which requires killing off experimental features that users simply ignore. By cutting out extra fluff and focusing on core chat features, Microsoft hopes to build a faster, cleaner software tool that fits naturally into daily work routines.
