Future Webmasters: Automattic Launches Free WordPress Tier to Capture Next-Gen Creators

Automattic is launching a new initiative aimed directly at high school and college classrooms. The parent company behind WordPress.com is rolling out a free web creation package called WordPress.com Education. This program gives teachers and students free access to publishing tools, custom domain names, and technical management features without requiring credit cards or temporary free trials.

Teachers can sign up their classes to get every student a free custom domain on extensions like .blog or .art, alongside a hosted WordPress site for an entire year. Automattic unveiled the package at its WordCamp U.S. event, emphasizing that the student plan includes full technical functionality rather than a stripped-down trial version. Every student account receives six gigabytes of media storage, automated daily backups, staging environments, custom plug-in support, and full technical access via SFTP, SSH, phpMyAdmin, and Studio Sync.

Giving students access to real hosting infrastructure helps educators teach web development, digital journalism, and graphic design through hands-on practice. Instead of practicing on mock tools or static local environments, students build actual live sites for team assignments, portfolio builds, and personal projects.

This educational push targets a major trend among younger internet users. While WordPress powers roughly 43 percent of all active websites, younger creators often skip building custom sites entirely, preferring to build their online presence on social media apps. By putting professional web tools into classrooms, Automattic introduces young builders to true site ownership early in their careers.

The zero-cost entry point also opens doors for underfunded schools that lack budgets for web design software and hosting subscriptions. Bringing real development environments into classrooms helps students build practical technical skills that translate directly into digital marketing, media production, and software engineering roles.

When the free academic year ends, students can keep their custom domains running for two dollars per month. If a student chooses not to pay, their site simply transitions to a free WordPress.com sub-domain without losing any published pages, blog posts, media uploads, or visitor comments.

Automattic tested the initiative through pilot programs involving 5,000 students across 27 countries. Internal surveys from participating educators showed that 98.9 percent of teachers saw clear improvements in student career readiness, while 81.5 percent reported that building live sites boosted students’ entrepreneurial confidence.

By giving young creators free access to high-end publishing tools, Automattic builds early brand loyalty while equipping the next generation of web builders with real technical experience.
