Ghost in the Server: Former Apple Engineer Allegedly Uses Zero Day Bug to Raid Secrets for OpenAI

The dramatic legal war between Apple and OpenAI just took a dark turn into the world of active cybersecurity exploits. In its ongoing lawsuit, Apple revealed shocking new technical details about how a former employee allegedly managed to infiltrate its internal servers. The company claims a systems electrical engineer named Chang Liu discovered and exploited a rare, unpatched security vulnerability to download a massive collection of confidential files. He pulled off this digital heist weeks after leaving his position at Apple to start a new job at OpenAI.

According to the official legal complaint, Liu stumbled upon a zero-day vulnerability hidden deep within Apple’s user authentication network. A zero-day bug means the software developers had zero days to fix the problem because they did not even know the security hole existed until someone weaponized it. In this case, the hidden flaw allowed an individual to bypass standard login security checks and roam freely through the network architecture. Apple engineers have since patched the security hole and confirmed they cut off the employee’s network credentials immediately after discovering the breach. While Apple admitted that the glitch theoretically opened a door for a few other internal accounts to view protected servers, their forensic logs show that only Liu discovered and actively exploited the vulnerability to drain corporate data.

This messy disclosure highlights a massive headache for modern tech firms. Managing data security during employee offboarding is incredibly difficult. When workers leave a company, security teams must move instantly to wipe corporate hardware, revoke digital keycards, and delete network credentials. If an organization fails to completely decommission an outgoing worker’s account profiles, they leave themselves wide open to massive security lapses, malicious data breaches, or vindictive behavior from unhappy former staff members.

The stolen data contains an absolute goldmine of proprietary technology. Apple claims that Liu spent several weeks downloading dozens of highly sensitive files while working his new job at OpenAI. These files hold deep technical data regarding unreleased hardware products, official engineering presentations, precise blueprint specifications, and highly classified project timelines.

The situation gets even wilder. Court documents state that Liu never returned his official Apple work laptop, using it instead as a bridge to pull data from Apple’s central databases. When managers asked for the hardware back, he claimed he used a completely different machine. While working at OpenAI, Liu allegedly reached out to a former colleague named Yu-Ting Peng, who still worked at Apple but had already accepted a future job offer from OpenAI. Liu reportedly used Peng’s active corporate laptop to access the server rooms while she was away from her desk, bypassing security protocols entirely.

The forensic logging reports show that during February 2026, Liu repeatedly connected to Apple’s network storage system, a secure cloud repository holding the crown jewels of Apple’s industrial design divisions. The engineer realized his old login credentials still worked due to the unknown authentication bug, allowing him to bypass the firewall completely undetected. When Liu realized he had full admin access to the cloud drives, he allegedly sent a chat message to Peng saying, “LOL… I found out I can access the network share, so funny.” Instead of reporting the dangerous security vulnerability to Apple as his employment contract required, he used the access to copy files until security teams finally caught the spike in network traffic. Apple filed its lawsuit in the San Jose federal court, demanding a full jury trial to stop OpenAI from using its stolen blueprints.
