Human Potential Engine: Reach Capital Secures $265 Million Fund V for EdTech Founders

Reach Capital announced Tuesday that it closed a brand new $265 million Fund V. The eleven year old San Francisco venture firm plans to use this fresh capital to back founders building artificial intelligence tools designed to expand human potential. Tony Wan, who leads platform strategy at Reach Capital, explained that the team wants to support startups building across three main pillars: learning, health, and work.

Wan emphasized that Reach Capital believes software should support human progress rather than replace workers directly. The investment firm previously backed popular platforms including coding site Replit, classroom network ClassDojo, and pediatric care provider CareCare.

Through Fund V, Reach Capital expects to write check sizes ranging from $1 million to $10 million for roughly 50 individual companies over the next three years. These initial checks will target early stage teams running pre-seed, seed, and Series A funding rounds. The firm has not officially selected any portfolio companies for Fund V backing yet.

Major institutional investors backed the new fund, including Capricorn Investment Group, the LEGO Foundation, College Board, and local pension funds for Los Angeles fire and police workers. Reach Capital general partner Jomayra Herrera confirmed that the team wrapped up fundraising in under six months because existing institutional backers eagerly doubled down on their commitments.

Herrera noted that institutional investors currently prefer specialized, sector focused funds that invest with strong conviction. Industry reports from PitchBook and the National Venture Capital Association show that established mega funds captured more than 90 percent of the $67 billion raised by U.S. venture capital firms through May. That concentration leaves a smaller pool of capital for general middle market funds, while hyper focused sector funds like Reach Capital continue attracting strong investor interest.

Reach Capital previously raised $215 million for its Fund IV in 2023 and $165 million for Fund III in 2021. The steady growth of its fund size reflects continuous momentum in educational technology, workforce training, and health care software investments.

The firm also celebrated major portfolio exits recently. In June, productivity company Superhuman acquired GPTZero, an AI detection startup co-founded by Princeton graduate Edward Tian. Before the buyout, GPTZero grew its user base to over 19 million registered users while generating $30 million in annual recurring revenue on just $13.5 million in total raised capital. Reach Capital invested in GPTZero early alongside venture firms like Uncork Capital, Footwork, and Jack Altman Alt Capital.

By securing $265 million in fresh capital, Reach Capital strengthens its position as a primary backer for early stage startups. Funding tools that help people learn faster, work smarter, and access better health resources keeps human potential at the very center of software innovation.
