Lease the Ecosystem: Apple Teams Up With Klarna to Shake Up Hardware Buying

Apple is changing how people buy its gear by launching a new device leasing program called Apple Upgrade. The company partnered directly with buy now, pay later provider Klarna to give shoppers a fresh monthly payment route for iPhones, Apple Watches, Macs, and iPads. United States customers can access the program right now through retail store locations, the Apple Store app, and the official website.

Leasing plans start at predictable monthly price points depending on the device family you choose. iPhone leases kick off at $17.99 per month, while Apple Watch plans start at $11.99 per month. If you need desktop or laptop hardware, Mac leases begin at $24.99 per month, while iPad plans start at $11.99 per month. Lease duration options vary by product line. Apple offers one-year and two-year leasing structures for iPhones and Apple Watches, while Mac and iPad buyers can choose between two-year and three-year payment schedules.

When your lease agreement ends, you get three straightforward options. You can swap your old gear for the newest generation device, buy your current hardware outright by making a single payoff payment, or return the item and exit the program entirely without further commitment.

This hardware leasing move comes at a strategic time for Apple as tech manufacturers grapple with supply chain disruptions and memory chip shortages across the globe. Industry insiders refer to this ongoing hardware component squeeze as RAMageddon, an supply shortage that pushed memory prices up across the tech industry. That cost pressure forced Apple to raise retail prices on its Mac and iPad lines recently, though it kept base iPhone pricing steady. Rolling out structured monthly leasing options helps cushion that price bump, making high-end tech fit comfortably inside consumer budgets.

Managing lease agreements stays simple through software integration. Buyers can monitor payment schedules, view remaining balances, and handle billing details directly inside the Klarna mobile app. To make room for this new partnership, Apple is ending its older in-house financing structures in the United States, including the original iPhone Upgrade Program and iPhone Payments program.

This official rollout confirms earlier industry reports from Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, who revealed that Apple was preparing a flexible lease-to-own subscription service for its hardware lineup.

Apple also added incentives for active ecosystem users. Enrolling customers can reduce their monthly lease costs by trading in older gear through the standard Apple Trade In program. Shoppers who use their Apple Card to cover their Klarna lease installments will also earn three percent Daily Cash back on every monthly payment.

Partnering with Klarna lets Apple shift the financial management burden while keeping its hardware accessible to millions of buyers. Instead of paying thousands upfront for new computers and phones, consumers get a predictable, flexible path to keep their tech current.
