Meltdown to Goldmine: How a 25-Year-Old AI Hedge Fund Boss Lost Billions on Stocks but Kept a $5 Billion Anthropic Prize

Former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner built one of the fastest-growing hedge funds in Wall Street history. His fund, Situational Awareness, rode the artificial intelligence boom to astronomical heights. Assets under management reached a staggering $45 billion at peak performance earlier this year. The 25-year-old manager, who had zero formal trading experience before starting the firm in 2024, generated staggering gains of over 400 percent through June.

Aschenbrenner previously graduated as valedictorian from Columbia University at just 19 years old. He later joined OpenAI to work on its Superalignment team alongside AI pioneers Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike. OpenAI dismissed him in 2024 over an alleged internal information leak, a claim Aschenbrenner disputed. Shortly after leaving, he published a famous 165-page paper predicting massive growth in AI hardware, power needs, and specialized computing. That research paper attracted high-profile tech backers, including Stripe founders Patrick and John Collison, as well as Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross. They funded Aschenbrenner vision, allowing him to launch Situational Awareness.

Then the public market turned upside down. A sudden selloff in hardware, semiconductor, and clean energy stocks hit the fund like a freight train. Wall Street investors began worrying that tech giants were spending hundreds of billions on data centers without seeing fast returns. Borrowed money amplified every single drop in portfolio value. Public equities backed by the fund collapsed rapidly over a few brutal weeks in July. Key holdings like memory chip makers SK Hynix and Sandisk, clean energy firm Bloom Energy, and neocloud provider Nebius Group lost over 30 percent of their market value.

As prime brokers called for additional cash to back falling positions, Aschenbrenner tried to raise fresh capital from existing clients. On July 24, he sent a letter to investors pitching the market slump as a rare buying opportunity. He urged clients to commit new money starting August 1. However, panic among institutional backers meant those fresh cash commitments failed to materialize in time. Lenders began demanding immediate sales to satisfy margin calls.

To stop the bleeding, Situational Awareness reached a massive block deal with Ken Griffin hedge fund Citadel. Citadel stepped in to buy the bulk of the fund public stock portfolio in a single overnight transaction. That emergency sale wiped out most of the fund public equity holdings, dropping total assets from $20 billion down to around $10 billion. While Citadel snapped up discounted tech stocks, Aschenbrenner public market empire effectively collapsed in one of the fastest fire sales in financial history.

Despite the public stock disaster, Aschenbrenner is far from finished. Situational Awareness kept its private investment portfolio completely untouched during the Citadel transaction. The crown jewel of that private portfolio is a massive stake in AI startup Anthropic, currently valued at roughly $5 billion. Anthropic plans to go public soon in what could be one of the largest tech debuts of the decade. A massive valuation bump during an Anthropic stock listing could easily wipe away Aschenbrenner public market losses and deliver billions in fresh profits to his fund.

Aschenbrenner fund also holds valuable private stakes in chipmaker MatX and data center startup Fluidstack, which is currently negotiating a fresh funding round at an $18 billion valuation. The story of Situational Awareness reveals the extreme volatility powering the current tech market. Taking massive, concentrated positions using borrowed cash can build fortunes overnight, but market pullbacks destroy those gains just as quickly. Aschenbrenner bold bet on hardware infrastructure collapsed in public stock markets, but his early private investments in Anthropic might still turn this brutal crash into an ultimate financial victory.
