Meta Tech Intrusion: New Muse Image App Hijacks Public Instagram Photos to Generate AI Art

The social media landscape is facing a massive tracking controversy. Meta officially launched Muse Image, a new graphic generation tool built by Meta Superintelligence Labs, its dedicated technology unit. The feature, which engineers previously developed under the internal code name Mango, is completely free to use. Meta is rolling the tool out across its core communication platforms, integrating it directly into the main Meta AI application, Instagram Stories, and WhatsApp text chats.

While the engineering team designed the software to handle everyday creative tasks, the product is already causing major pushback from users. On the surface, Muse Image handles standard generation chores like producing stylized cartoon icons or drafting colorful marketing templates. If a user runs out of creative ideas, the interface provides pre-baked template prompts to spark inspiration.

The real controversy stems from a highly invasive photo-remixing feature. The software allows any user to pull public pictures from another person’s Instagram profile and rewrite them using text prompts. An outsider can take a photo you uploaded of yourself, type a command, and completely change your clothing, background, or appearance to generate a totally new image.

Privacy researchers immediately flagged this capability as a severe threat to digital safety. Digital rights advocates pointed out that forcing real individuals into automated software generation setups without explicit consent is a massive privacy disaster. Meta’s official policy guidelines confirm this aggressive behavior, stating plainly that people can build new content with your public Instagram photos using their digital features, and the company will never notify you when someone modifies your face or likeness.

The company claims that regular users maintain full control over their content, explaining that you can dig through your account settings to disable this image-sharing feature. However, the option is opt-out by default, meaning the system automatically shares your library unless you actively find and flip the hidden security switch.

Aside from the controversial profile scraping tool, Meta is pushing Muse Image into its commercial services. Advertisers can use the engine to mock up custom marketing campaigns or build digital backdrop additions for Facebook Marketplace listings. For example, a person trying to sell an old couch can use the software to see how the furniture looks inside a clean, digital living room. The app also supports text-based image editing, allowing users to type commands to erase unwanted background characters from personal photos or generate custom QR codes on top of graphics.

This aggressive data strategy fits into Meta’s historical pattern of managing user data. The tech giant has a notoriously messy privacy record, including paying a record five billion dollar penalty to the Federal Trade Commission in 2019 after regulators proved the firm allowed political consulting networks to scrape personal data from tens of millions of profiles without consent. Meta also had to shut down its automated facial recognition network in 2021 following intense legal pressure over biometric tracking. By launching an image-scraping tool that automatically defaults to sharing user data, Meta is proving that it will continue to prioritize automated product growth over consumer privacy.
