Musical Journaling: Spotify Adds User Notes to Attach Memories directly to Songs

Musical Journaling: Spotify Adds User Notes to Attach Memories directly to Songs

Spotify is rolling out a brand new feature called User Notes to give listeners a personal way to customize their playlists. The streaming giant built this option so users can attach custom text captions to specific tracks, letting people save personal thoughts, memories, and backstories right next to the music they love.

The main idea behind the tool is simple: turn standard music playlists into personal journals. You can write down why you added a specific track to a list, record the exact date you first discovered an artist, or note special life events tied to the music. For example, you might add a note remembering that a song played during a late-night drive, a summer vacation trip, or a memorable first date.

By adding a space for text entries, Spotify wants to make playlists feel far more intimate. Standard streaming services focus almost entirely on recommendations, algorithmic mixes, and endless auto-playing queues. Adding a journaling element gives Spotify a unique social edge over main competitors like Apple Music and YouTube Music, neither of which offer custom note-taking options inside their mobile apps.

Spotify explained in a release that over time, these quick captions paint a clear picture of the music listeners love and the personal life moments that shaped those choices. The feature turns basic lists of songs into digital scrapbooks, adding meaningful personal context directly around the tracks people stream every day.

The feature is currently rolling out to users who are 16 and older across both free and premium subscription tiers in select regional markets. Accessing the feature requires just a few quick taps inside the mobile application interface. First, open a playlist you created or one that contains songs you added yourself. Tap the three dots next to any specific track, select the new “Add note” option from the menu, write your short caption, and tap save. Once published, your note becomes visible to anyone viewing that public playlist, featuring your display name linked directly to your profile.

Alongside the release of User Notes, Spotify also introduced an updated Running Mode feature for subscribers. This tool cues up songs based on different phases of your run, matching music speed and genre selections directly to your workout pace and personal listening habits. Running Mode is currently available exclusively for Spotify Premium subscribers in select testing regions.

Adding these personal touches keeps Spotify steps ahead in keeping users active inside its app ecosystem. Giving people a way to log memories alongside their favorite songs builds a deeper connection to their personal libraries, making it much harder to walk away to competing music services.
