Orbit Monopoly: Elon Musk Slams Mukesh Ambani as Starlink India Launch Hits Political Roadblocks

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk escalated his public feud with Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, accusing the Reliance Industries chairman of wielding outsized political influence to block Starlink from launching satellite internet services across India. Musk posted a series of sharp criticisms on X, referring to Ambani as the country’s prime minister and arguing that Starlink would connect remote rural communities, expand access for small businesses, and offer cheap broadband options. He publicly questioned whether Ambani preferred maintaining a local telecom monopoly over letting foreign satellite operators compete fairly in the market.

The public confrontation follows earlier statements where Musk accused unnamed Indian oligarchs of pressuring government regulators to protect their domestic business interests. India’s Ministry of Communications rejected the allegations, stating that the nation maintains a fair, non-discriminatory regulatory framework for all satellite communications providers. Despite official denials, Musk continued questioning Ambani’s influence over New Delhi’s telecommunications policy, asking followers if Ambani operated as the real authority behind India’s business decisions.

SpaceX has spent years attempting to secure operational licenses for Starlink in India, even signing distribution agreements with Ambani’s Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel last year to help distribute hardware once approved. However, New Delhi has yet to grant final security clearances or assign spectrum rights for commercial launch. India’s telecom ministry stated that Starlink, alongside two other licensed satellite operators, remains under active security evaluations that must finish before any company receives orbital spectrum. The ministry insisted that all three operators move through the exact same regulatory pipeline without special treatment.

The Indian market represents a massive expansion target for global tech companies, offering over one billion potential internet users. Entering the market requires navigating complex relationships with established domestic conglomerates like Reliance, which owns India’s largest mobile operator and maintains close ties to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration. Competing telecom giants Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are also building their own satellite capabilities, partnering with Luxembourg-based SES and Eutelsat OneWeb to capture market share.

Starlink and Reliance Jio previously clashed over how the Indian government should distribute satellite spectrum. Musk advocated for administrative assignment, which aligns with global satellite standards, while Jio pushed for a competitive spectrum auction. New Delhi eventually sided with Starlink’s position to allocate spectrum administratively, but final clearance delays continue keeping Starlink off Indian networks. Meanwhile, India’s telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia pushed back against Musk’s claims, stating firmly that the nation does not permit monopolies in any sector.

Navigating regulatory hurdles in India extends beyond SpaceX to Musk’s electric vehicle maker, Tesla. Tesla launched sales in India last year after years of build-up, but registered just 699 vehicles in its first 12 months due to high import tariffs pushing vehicle prices far above US retail rates. Both ventures highlight the steep challenges foreign tech companies face when trying to enter heavily protected domestic markets. Overcoming local regulatory delays, bureaucratic hurdles, and political opposition will determine whether Starlink can bring high-speed satellite broadband to millions of unconnected consumers across India.
