Orbital Holdings: Inside Trump’s Post-IPO Bet on Elon Musk’s SpaceX

President Donald Trump bought up to $50,000 worth of SpaceX shares on June 23, according to a official financial disclosure form first reported by Reuters. The purchase happened exactly two weeks after Elon Musk’s rocket company completed its record-setting initial public offering.

The public disclosure filing does not reveal the exact purchase price Trump paid for the equity stake, but market records show SpaceX shares fell from their peak highs of over $200 down to the mid-$150 range on June 23. By the close of trading on Monday, SpaceX stock dropped further to match its original $135 debut price, likely putting the president’s investment underwater for the time being.

Trump and Musk maintain a close relationship, following a temporary rift last summer when Musk publicly accused the administration of holding back Department of Justice records on Jeffrey Epstein. Recent analysis from The Wall Street Journal highlights how SpaceX continues winning large government contracts while benefiting directly from deregulation policies pushed by the White House.

When asked about the stock purchase, White House spokesman Davis Ingle told Reuters that third-party financial managers oversee the president’s investment portfolio. Ingle explained that these professional money managers execute trades to mirror major market indexes like the Schwab 1000 rather than making individual stock picks.

Ahead of its public listing, SpaceX lobbied major index managers to change their inclusion criteria, allowing newly public firms to enter stock indexes much faster than traditional timelines allowed. Because of those index rule updates, many individual investors now hold SpaceX shares inside standard index funds without knowing it.

The financial connection between political figures and government contractors often draws public scrutiny. When high-profile politicians hold stakes in companies that secure massive defense contracts, questions about potential conflicts of interest naturally come up.

SpaceX continues to dominate the commercial launch market, carrying satellites into orbit and supplying the International Space Station. Securing steady government contracts provides stable cash flow, helping the company expand satellite internet networks and build heavy payload launch vehicles.

Navigating stock market fluctuations requires patience, even for high-profile investors buying into major tech offerings. As SpaceX expands its commercial launch operations, investors will be tracking whether public index listings deliver steady long-term growth.
