Prompt to Publish: Google Pics Takes Aim at Canva With Automated Visual Generation
Google officially entered the creative software space with a new image-creation tool called Google Pics. The application joins the Google Workspace software family, serving business accounts and paid Google AI subscribers.
Google built the app using its Nano Banana image-generation model. Rollout begins over coming weeks, reaching most Workspace accounts alongside users paying for Google AI Pro or Ultra plans.
Similar to popular platforms like Adobe Express and Canva, Google built this app to handle everyday graphic tasks for work and personal projects. Users can build posters, social media banners, event flyers, and custom illustrations directly inside the software.
However, Google Pics operates differently from traditional design tools. On Canva, artists and photographers publish pre-made templates, stock graphics, and custom photo packs to earn marketplace royalties. Google Pics skips template marketplaces entirely, generating custom graphics from text prompts using models trained on artist works.
Google Pics also differs from Adobe Express, where creators usually build assets from scratch using manual layout tools. Google’s tool relies on prompt-based generation to turn text descriptions into fresh visuals instantly.
The app features deep photo editing tools alongside basic generation capabilities. Users can isolate specific objects inside an image, move elements around, translate text embedded inside graphics, and edit assets collaboratively with team members. The system generates multiple variations for every text prompt, letting creators select the best option for their project.
Google is embedding the software directly into Google Workspace apps, starting with Google Docs and Google Slides. Google Drive integration will follow shortly after the initial launch.
Shifting from template editing to text-driven image generation changes how teams create visual content. Office workers who lack graphic design skills can now build custom slide decks, marketing graphics, and social posts without hiring outside design agencies or buying template packs.
Direct integration into Google Docs and Slides keeps creators inside their primary work apps. Instead of leaving a document to generate graphics on external sites, users can type prompts directly inside their presentation deck to generate custom visual assets.
As automated creation software improves, traditional graphic marketplaces face growing pressure. When software generates custom graphics on demand, reliance on static stock photos and pre-built templates drops significantly. Google Pics gives business teams a fast way to move from text ideas to finished visual assets.
