Reality Check: Amazon Admits It Lacks a Clear Plan to Hit Net-Zero Targets

Amazon’s chief sustainability officer publicly acknowledged that the retail giant does not actually know how to reach its goal of zero net carbon emissions by 2040. Speaking at an Axios event, Kara Hurst stated that while the company keeps pushing toward that target, she will not pretend that internal teams know every step required to get there.

That admission offers a frank look at corporate climate goals, but raises serious questions across the tech sector. If a corporate powerhouse like Amazon cannot map out a complete path to eliminate carbon emissions, smaller companies face an even steeper hill.

Amazon operates on a massive global scale, recording annual revenues up to $717 billion, which rivals the entire national economy of Ireland. UN leaders point out that economic power has shifted heavily toward a handful of giant corporations. With that level of influence comes heavy environmental responsibility, forcing corporate leaders to tackle massive logistics footprints.

Hurst noted that tackling climate change requires active cooperation between private companies and public governments. She emphasized that Amazon steps up where it can, but no single entity can solve systemic infrastructure hurdles alone.

To its credit, Amazon remains one of the largest corporate buyers of clean energy globally, adding 42 gigawatts of clean power capacity to its portfolio. Hurst added that Amazon reduced its carbon intensity, which measures pollution generated relative to revenue dollars. However, carbon intensity numbers fluctuate depending on the timeframe analyzed. While intensity dropped compared to 2014 metrics, it rose slightly last year compared to 2024 levels, even though total numbers stayed below 2022 peaks.

Amazon’s sprawling operations span logistics, aviation, agriculture, construction, and global cloud computing. Because supply chains touch almost every sector, cutting total emissions requires clean power options across every supplier and shipping partner. Hurst reiterated that Amazon holds itself accountable to its Climate Pledge commitment of reaching net-zero carbon by 2040.

Yet Amazon continues making operational choices that contradict those public climate goals. Recent reports revealed company plans to build a 7.65 gigawatt natural gas power plant to supply a massive data center campus. That single gas project could release up to 33 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, making it the largest single point of carbon pollution in the entire United States.

Most corporations prioritize revenue growth over environmental pledges when forced to choose. Amazon operates the largest cloud computing service in the world, and powering new data centers generates massive revenue that corporate leadership refuses to pass up.

Climate watchers hoped market forces would drive clean energy adoption naturally as renewable power costs fell. However, the recent rush for data center power reveals clear limits to that market-driven approach. By relying on natural gas to meet surging power needs, tech giants essentially push climate solutions down the road, leaving future generations of executives to solve the resulting pollution crisis.
