Scrolling for Shows: HBO Max Hijacks TikTok Feed to Fix Content Paralysis

HBO Max is officially joining the vertical video craze by adding a TikTok-style short-form feed to its mobile app. Warner Bros. announced the platform update alongside a brand new experimental AI-powered conversational search engine. The streaming giant built both features to solve a major problem plaguing viewers: spending more time scrolling through endless menus than actually watching movies.

Modern streaming libraries hold tens of thousands of hours of content, making selection fatigue a real issue for subscribers. Consumers used to short-form video apps like TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels expect fast, continuous visual content discovery. HBO Max wants to capture that mindless scrolling habit and turn it into active watch time.

When users open the app, a new Shorts icon sits in the bottom navigation menu. Tapping this tab opens an endless vertical feed of trailers, iconic scenes, behind-the-scenes clips, and bonus content. The underlying algorithm personalizes the video stream using personal watch history and genre preferences. If a clip catches your attention, you can jump straight into the full episode or movie with a single tap, or quickly save the title to your watch list for later.

Warner Bros. uses artificial intelligence tools to analyze thousands of hours of video content, breaking down footage scene by scene to flag high-energy moments. HBO Max editors then review those computer-generated clips to curate the final video library, ensuring the feed showcases compelling highlights from flagship shows like House of the Dragon, The Pitt, and Hacks.

HBO Max is not the first streaming platform to adopt vertical video feeds. Competitors like Netflix, Disney+, and Peacock already run vertical preview feeds to showcase movies and shows. HBO Max is currently testing its new vertical feed with select iOS users in the United States before expanding access to Android devices and international markets later this year.

Alongside the vertical feed, HBO Max rolled out a natural language conversational search tool. Instead of typing rigid movie titles or actor names into a search bar, users can type descriptive prompts based on mood or scenario. For example, you can search for “in the mood for a comedy,” “dysfunctional family drama,” or “best movie for a girls night in” to pull up relevant recommendations.

This conversational search update matches broader industry trends. Netflix tested a similar AI-assisted search feature for subscribers last year, while Amazon introduced voice-based search on Fire TV devices to answer open-ended questions about movies and television shows. HBO Max is testing its experimental search tool with select Android users in the United States, with broader rollouts planned across additional devices soon.

By combining endless vertical video scrolling with flexible AI search, HBO Max hopes to keep subscribers engaged inside its app interface. Cutting down decision fatigue keeps viewers watching, helping the platform protect its subscription base in an increasingly crowded streaming market.
