Silicon Empire: Tesla and SpaceX Drop $16.8 Billion to Build the Monster Texas ‘Terafab’

Tesla and SpaceX announced plans to build an advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility called Terafab in Grimes County, Texas, just outside Houston. Elon Musk, CEO of both enterprises, confirmed the companies will put down an initial investment of $16.8 billion to get the project off the ground. Musk described the planned site as the largest and most valuable physical building on Earth, with SpaceX project documents laying out over 100 million square feet of manufacturing space.

The two tech giants expect the massive facility to hire at least 3,000 workers from Grimes County and neighboring Brazos County. According to an official update on the SpaceX website, Terafab aims to function as an advanced semiconductor manufacturing hub, bridging the widening gap between current global chip production and future processing requirements.

Musk long-term strategic vision relies heavily on processing hardware. Automated taxicabs, humanoid factory robots, and orbiting satellite networks all require huge amounts of raw compute power. Current global chip output cannot keep up with those future processing demands. Official SpaceX filings hint that total capital spending on the multi-phase construction plan could reach $119 billion over time, even though corporate executives avoided discussing Terafab during their recent earnings call.

Semiconductor maker Intel also plans to contribute to the Terafab initiative, although company officials remain tight-lipped about their exact financial or technical role.

Terafab is designed to build custom silicon at scale. The factory floor brings fabrication, packaging, and hardware testing into a single integrated location. Putting every step of the manufacturing pipeline under one roof accelerates hardware updates and speeds up hardware delivery. The site will focus on producing specialized chips tailored for edge processing and real-time inference tasks. These microprocessors will directly power Tesla Optimus robots, self-driving Cybercabs, and SpaceX space-based data processing systems.

To address regional environmental concerns, SpaceX confirmed it will draw operational water directly from the local Gibbons Creek Reservoir rather than pumping local groundwater supplies.

The official announcement arrived right after a tense county meeting on Wednesday, where hundreds of local residents voiced strong concerns over massive tax breaks and a lack of public transparency. Local officials moved quickly to calm those community fears. Grimes-Shiro Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Sarah Borowicz released a statement through the Texas Governor office, arguing that the partnership will boost the local school district, create new opportunities, and expand educational programs for local students.
