Silicon Power Shift: Google Secret Silicon Weapon to Turbocharge Gemini

Silicon Power Shift: Google Secret Silicon Weapon to Turbocharge Gemini

Alphabet is building a new server chip to make its Gemini models run far more efficiently. The internal project, codenamed Frozen v2, aims for release in 2028 according to reports from anonymous sources. Early estimates suggest this custom processor could run six to ten times better than existing Google chips, measured by how many output tokens it generates per unit of power.

Google refrained from giving a direct confirmation, but executives did not deny the project either. Company representatives stated that engineering teams constantly test new hardware innovations to improve performance for users. They added that co-designing hardware alongside software remains central to their overall infrastructure strategy, even if every prototype project does not reach commercial production.

Tech companies across Silicon Valley face heavy pressure to design custom silicon. Building in-house processors cuts operating costs, helps manage global hardware shortages, and improves processing speeds. Efficiency has become a central focus for major tech firms as investors raise concerns over massive artificial intelligence spending. Every major platform wants to break its dependence on Nvidia, which dominates the market for artificial intelligence hardware.

Google is far from alone in this custom hardware race. In June, OpenAI announced its first custom inference processor, codenamed Jalapeño. Reports also show Anthropic discussing a new chip manufacturing partnership with Samsung to supply its own infrastructure needs.

Wall Street continues to monitor Alphabet massive capital expenditures. Estimates show Google plans to spend between $180 billion and $190 billion on infrastructure buildouts. With that much capital on the line, Google needs to demonstrate clear efficiency gains to prove those massive investments yield real returns over time.

News of the Frozen v2 design helped calm market worries ahead of Google upcoming earnings report. Alphabet stock climbed roughly 3 percent on Monday morning following initial reports about the project. If Google hits its performance goals by 2028, custom silicon will give the company a major edge in scaling its software while keeping energy costs under control.
