Sonic Commentary: Spotify Launches Playlist Notes to Share Song Stories

Spotify introduced a new feature called Playlist Notes on Monday, giving everyday listeners and official curators a way to share the stories behind their song choices. The update expands on the User Notes feature Spotify introduced last month, which allowed people to attach private commentary to individual tracks inside their personal libraries.

With Playlist Notes, creators can add context to songs, podcast episodes, and audiobooks saved inside custom playlists. You can explain why a specific track made the list, share a personal memory tied to a song, or point out a killer guitar solo that everyone needs to hear.

Adding a note takes just a few quick taps in the Spotify mobile app. Open any playlist you created or co-edit, tap the three dots beside a track, select the option to add a note, and save your text. Anyone who views your public playlist can read your comments right below the song title.

Spotify is also rolling out this feature to its own editorial team. In-house curators will attach public notes explaining why they selected specific tracks for flagship playlists. Spotify is starting this rollout on major curated feeds, including Today’s Top Hits, RapCaviar, Hot Country, All New Pop, and Fresh Finds Hip-Hop.

To accompany these editorial notes, Spotify created dedicated Editor Profiles for its curation team. These public profile pages display an editor’s favorite tracks, top albums, and active playlist projects. Giving listeners a direct look at the real human beings who curate major playlists adds a personal touch to automated music recommendations.

User-created notes are rolling out across iOS and Android devices in over 100 global markets. Official editor notes and editor profile pages are going live for free and premium account holders aged 16 and older across six primary regions: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

While adding short text blurbs seems like a modest update, the change aligns with Spotify’s broader push to make its streaming app feel more interactive and community-driven. Giving listeners a way to share personal stories turns music streaming into a shared conversation rather than a passive listening session.

Adding social commentary features also helps Spotify distinguish itself from competitors like Apple Music and YouTube Music. The music giant recently shared its second-quarter earnings report, confirming that paid subscriber numbers passed 300 million for the first time while total active monthly users hit 777 million worldwide.

Giving users a space to express why music matters to them builds deeper connections across the platform. As streaming platforms compete for listener attention, blending social interaction with personalized music discovery gives Spotify a clear edge in keeping users engaged.
