Talk to the Screen: Amazon Puts a Chatty AI Expert on Every Product Page

Amazon just changed how you shop on your phone. On Tuesday, the company launched a new feature that lets you talk to your screen to get the lowdown on products. Instead of digging through thousands of reviews or reading long descriptions, you can just ask a question. The AI answers you out loud in real time. Amazon calls these “AI-powered shopping experts.” They present information in a natural, conversational way that feels like you are chatting with a real person at a store.

The goal of this “Join the chat” feature is to save you time. You no longer have to scroll forever to find out if a coffee maker is good for beginners or if a sweater feels itchy against your skin. The AI does the homework for you. It scans product features, customer feedback, and other data to give you a direct answer. It does not just spit out generic facts. Amazon says the AI learns from the conversation to provide more relevant details as you keep talking. It also makes sure not to repeat itself, so the chat stays fresh and helpful.

How to Start the Conversation

Using the feature is simple. When you open a product page in the Amazon app, look for a button that says “Hear the highlights” right under the product image. Once you tap it, you can listen to a quick summary of what people think about the item. From there, you can tap the “Join the chat” icon to start asking specific questions. You can type your questions or use your voice. The best part is that the audio keeps playing while you continue to browse other parts of the page.

This new tool is part of a larger project called “Hear the highlights.” Amazon started testing these audio summaries last May. Now, they are available on millions of product pages for shoppers in the U.S. While not every single item has a summary yet, the list is growing fast. Amazon wants to make sure that every question you ask helps steer where the talk goes next. You get to customize the experience based on exactly what you need to know before you hit the “buy” button.

Part of a Growing AI Army

This audio experience is not the only AI tool Amazon has launched lately. It joins a lineup that includes Rufus, a generative AI assistant that helps you research products and compare different brands. There is also Interests, a tool that tracks what you like and shows you new items you might enjoy. Another feature called “Help me decide” suggests products based on your past searches and browsing history.

By adding voice and real-time audio to the mix, Amazon is betting that people want a more hands-free way to shop. It turns the lonely act of online shopping into a back-and-forth discussion. This shift could make it much easier for people to make confident choices without feeling overwhelmed by too much information. As AI continues to move into every corner of the Amazon app, the days of hunting for details in tiny text might finally be over.
