The Billion-Dollar Biotech Defection: Inside Miles Wang’s Plan to Speed Up Medicine With OpenAI Talent

OpenAI is about to lose one of its rising stars to the high-stakes world of biotechnology. Miles Wang, a prominent researcher at the ChatGPT creator company, is preparing to step down. He wants to launch a brand new startup focused on building advanced software models to design medicines and discover fresh treatments. He is not planning to go on this journey alone, either: several other researchers from OpenAI are preparing to leave the firm and join his new venture.

Industry sources say that Wang is currently in active talks with venture capital firms to raise about 200 million dollars. This early funding round would value his new venture at a staggering 2 billion dollars right out of the gate. Lightspeed Venture Partners is currently in discussions to lead the massive investment round. However, nothing is set in stone just yet. Talks are still happening, and the final deal structure or financial terms could easily change before anyone signs the final paperwork. When asked about the details, Wang disputed the funding figures and how sources described his new company, though he did not share the exact numbers himself. Representatives from Lightspeed chose not to comment on the negotiations.

This massive rush of investor cash highlights a growing trend in the tech world. Venture funds are pouring billions of dollars into companies that combine computer science with biology to predict molecular interactions. Just this week, a rival startup named Chai Discovery announced it secured 400 million dollars in fresh funding, pushing its market valuation to 3.8 billion dollars. Interestingly, Chai Discovery co-founder Josh Meier is also a former OpenAI researcher. Meanwhile, Google DeepMind spinout Isomorphic Labs raised an absolute mountain of cash in May, pulling in a 2.1 billion dollar Series B round.

Wang’s startup will likely focus on a clever shortcut in medicine. Instead of trying to design entirely new molecules from scratch, the team wants to build models that find new uses for existing drugs. This includes analyzing medications that have already won approval from the FDA, as well as compounds that failed during past clinical trials because they did not treat their original target disease. Finding fresh uses for these existing substances speeds up the developmental pipeline dramatically. Because these compounds have already passed basic human safety tests, a company can skip years of early testing and bring a working treatment to market much faster.

Wang’s fast rise fits a classic tech narrative. He joined OpenAI back in 2024 after dropping out of a computer science degree program at Harvard. His departure shows that investors are still highly comfortable betting massive sums on young founders who choose to skip college graduation to build tech. During his time at OpenAI, Wang focused heavily on how software can automate lab experiments and accelerate the pace of scientific breakthroughs. Now, he is taking those exact concepts and using them to build his own biotech empire.
