The Desktop Brain: Perplexity Brings Its Personal Computer Agent to Mac

The Desktop Brain: Perplexity Brings Its Personal Computer Agent to Mac

Perplexity is moving beyond the browser and taking over your desktop. On Thursday, May 7, 2026, the company announced that its “Personal Computer” tool is now available to all Mac users. This app is the company’s answer to local AI agents like OpenClaw. It aims to turn your Mac into a high-powered digital workstation where an AI assistant handles the hard work for you.

At its heart, Personal Computer is an expansion of Perplexity’s existing digital worker. It is smart, multi-talented, and designed to live right on your device. Instead of just searching the web, this tool can dive into your local files, open Mac apps, and use connectors to bridge different pieces of software. As the company puts it, this takes the AI out of the cloud and puts it right where your actual work happens.

Local AI Meets Real World Tasks

The push for local AI is growing fast. People want assistants that can actually do things on their behalf rather than just answering questions. While some rivals have faced security concerns because of how much access they require, Perplexity claims its Personal Computer offers a safer way to use AI. By running tasks locally on your Mac, you keep more control over your data while still getting the speed of an AI agent.

The software is now out of the invite-only phase. While it was limited to Perplexity Max subscribers last month, anyone with a Pro or Max subscription can now download the app and give it a spin. Once installed, the AI can work with your local documents, manage over 400 different software connectors, and use your personal context to get things right. It even works on the web, though pairing it with Perplexity’s Comet browser makes it even faster.

Control Your Mac from Your Phone

One of the coolest features of this release is remote access. Since the app is designed to run on always-on devices like a Mac Mini, you can actually reach it from your iPhone while you are away from your desk. You can start a task on your phone or approve a step in a complex workflow while you are out getting coffee.

Perplexity says this tool is built for people who handle heavy projects. It can juggle spreadsheets, long documents, and multi-app workflows. For instance, you could tell the agent to compare two different files from two different apps and then pull notes from a third app to write a summary. Because it works across your whole system, it saves you from the constant clicking and switching that usually kills productivity.

The Future of the Mac App

With this launch, Perplexity is moving on from its older, more basic Mac app. They plan to phase out the old version in the coming weeks so the team can focus entirely on making Personal Computer the best tool in the market. Currently, you have to download the app directly from Perplexity’s site, as it hasn’t hit the Mac App Store just yet.

This move shows that the age of the simple chatbot is ending. We are moving into a time where AI acts as a partner that lives on our hardware. By giving users a tool that understands their local files and their favorite apps, Perplexity is betting that the best AI is the one that stays close to home.
