Unified Workspace: OpenAI Merges ChatGPT Chat and Work Tabs into a Single Interface
OpenAI is redesigning its desktop app interface to clean up software clutter and streamline daily user workflows. In an update sent directly to account holders, the company announced plans to merge the existing Chat and Work tabs into one unified desktop screen. The interface overhaul addresses long-standing user complaints regarding confusing navigation layouts within the desktop application.
Up until now, desktop app users had to navigate a fragmented workspace separated into Codex coding tools, standard Chat windows, and dedicated Work tabs. Switching back and forth made tracking active projects, finding saved files, and monitoring background tasks needlessly difficult. Combining Chat and Work features into a single view gives users a streamlined workspace where they can brainstorm ideas and execute complex project steps without constantly toggling between different sections.
OpenAI is testing the unified experience with select user groups to gather feedback before rolling out the update to all desktop accounts. Inside the combined interface, users can upload documents, attach external plugins, and direct ChatGPT to perform multi-step projects in real time. Users can prompt the assistant to build custom web layouts, generate slide presentations, or pull web data while reviewing and editing output side by side. While Chat and Work functions merge, Codex will remain an independent, separate environment within the desktop application.
Alongside the design changes, OpenAI is updating its token usage policies. Both ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from a shared usage allowance pool. Company representatives stated that the shared system will not affect daily usage limits for average subscribers. However, heavy power users running complex automation models may experience longer wait times between token allowance resets depending on model choices and prompt frequency.
The desktop redesign mirrors competitive moves made across the software landscape. Rival AI developer Anthropic completed a similar workspace update in September, combining Claude’s chat tools and Cowork functions into one unified screen. Software developers recognize that forced navigation between separate tabs creates friction for professionals trying to complete complex tasks efficiently.
Unifying software tools represents a broader industry shift toward integrated productivity hubs. Rather than forcing users to run separate applications or juggle multiple internal tabs, modern desktop software brings file management, web research, code execution, and conversational generation together. Simplifying the user experience keeps desktop apps competitive as professionals rely heavily on automated assistants to handle daily administrative and creative tasks.
By building a cleaner interface and unifying token usage, OpenAI aims to keep users inside its ecosystem for complex project builds. Streamlining workspace tools allows users to move seamlessly from raw idea generation to finished deliverables. As desktop software continues to mature, reducing user friction remains a top priority for developers competing for market dominance in enterprise and professional settings.
