Voice Synthetic Reality: ElevenLabs CEO on Voice Agents, Margins, and IPO Realities

ElevenLabs chief executive Mati Staniszewski spoke candidly during a recent tech conference, addressing the rapid commercial growth of synthetic speech alongside the operational hurdles facing voice platform builders. The voice technology startup, valued at over $3 billion after its latest funding round, generates $100 million in annual recurring revenue.

The company built its initial reputation on realistic text-to-speech tools used by audio book publishers, media outlets, and independent content creators. However, the platform is rapidly shifting toward interactive conversational voice agents. Staniszewski noted that automated phone agents and real-time customer service assistants now drive a massive portion of overall platform usage.

Running real-time voice agents poses technical and financial hurdles that standard text models rarely face. Delivering responsive conversational audio requires keeping system latency extremely low so users experience zero lag during phone calls. At the same time, processing live audio streams burns heavy computing power, putting constant pressure on profit margins.

To maintain solid margins while scaling up, ElevenLabs optimizes how its software handles live audio processing and server routing. Staniszewski pointed out that enterprise clients expect cheap per-minute rates for customer support agents, forcing platform builders to make latency and infrastructure efficiency top priorities.

Disclosure forms another major operational focus for voice platforms. As synthetic voices become indistinguishable from human speakers, telling callers they are speaking with an automated voice agent becomes a mandatory design choice. Regulatory authorities across Europe and the United States are introducing strict transparency requirements for call centers and customer service platforms. ElevenLabs urges enterprise clients to inform callers clearly right at the start of every interaction.

When asked about potential initial public offering plans, Staniszewski shut down public market speculation. He emphasized that preparing for an initial public offering requires massive administrative overhead, distracting engineering teams from building products. Given the company’s strong revenue growth and healthy capital reserves, ElevenLabs plans to remain a private entity for the foreseeable future.

The voice technology sector faces rising competition from legacy cloud providers and fast-moving artificial intelligence research labs. As foundational speech models become widely available across major developer platforms, voice startups must deliver specialized features like custom voice cloning, emotional tone controls, and local language support to retain enterprise customers.

Building sustainable voice agent infrastructure requires balancing high computing demands with aggressive per-minute pricing. Companies that master low-latency routing while maintaining clear disclosure standards will lead the shift toward automated customer communications. ElevenLabs remains focused on expanding its voice network while keeping operations lean and avoiding public market distraction.
