Wealth Defense: Sergey Brin Drops $100M to Battle California Billionaire Tax

Google co-founder Sergey Brin just cut another $20 million check to Building a Better California, an advocacy group working to defeat a proposed state wealth tax. This latest political contribution pushes his total spending against the ballot measure past the $100 million mark. Brin currently ranks as the fourth-richest person on Earth, controlling an estimated net worth of $267 billion. Spending over $100 million on political messaging allows him to protect his fortune against a potential $13.3 billion tax bill if state voters pass the law.

The proposed state law, officially appearing on the ballot as California Proposition 40, aims directly at the state richest citizens. If voters approve the initiative this November, the state will slap a one-time 5 percent tax on the total net worth of roughly 200 billionaires living in California. Supporters plan to funnel the resulting tax money directly into state healthcare initiatives. That revenue boost comes at a critical time for California, as the state Medicaid program faces a massive $30 billion drop in federal support starting next year due to federal budget cuts.

Brin is not the only Silicon Valley leader taking drastic steps to avoid the upcoming wealth tax. Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg recently purchased a $170 million waterfront mansion near Miami to set up residence in Florida. Former Uber chief executive Travis Kalanick, prominent venture capitalist Peter Thiel, and Google co-founder Larry Page also moved their primary residences out of California over the past year.

Proposition 40 faces pushback from unexpected political figures, including California Governor Gavin Newsom. The governor expressed serious concerns about the long-term economic damage the tax could inflict on the Golden State, warning that forcing billionaires to flee will cost California jobs and investment capital. Rather than taxing wealthy residents at the state level, Newsom advocates for a national billionaire tax framework. He highlighted the unfairness of the current system, noting that average office workers frequently pay higher tax rates than wealthy heirs. He specifically called for ending the tax-free lifestyle loan strategy, where ultra-wealthy executives borrow money against huge stock portfolios to cover living expenses without generating taxable income.

California voters will decide the future of Proposition 40 at the ballot box this November. To counter the tax push, the advocacy group Brin supports is funding alternative ballot proposals. If voters approve these competing measures, they will place hard limits on new tax creations, effectively neutralizing Proposition 40 even if the wealth tax measure passes.

In contrast to Brin actions, Nvidia co-founder Jensen Huang is taking a totally different stance on the wealth tax issue. Huang, who would owe roughly $8 billion under the proposed law, publicly stated that he has no problem paying the tax. He explained that he willingly chose to live, raise his family, and build his technology empire in Silicon Valley, adding that he respects whatever tax rules the state sets for its residents.
