Corporate Reset: Uber Slashes 3,300 Jobs to Flatten Management and Push Autonomous Fleets

Uber is cutting roughly 3,300 jobs, reducing its global workforce by 10 percent in an effort to flatten middle management and redirect funding toward ridesharing, delivery, and robotaxi development. Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi announced the structural changes in an internal staff email released online Wednesday.

The restructuring plan shrinks management levels by 20 percent across the organization. Under the new operational layout, several former management personnel will transition into direct individual contributor roles rather than overseeing staff.

Initial details surrounding the headcount reduction surfaced in reports from Bloomberg. The mobility company is eliminating tiny teams containing only one or two employees by 50 percent. Uber is also letting go of staff members who sit more than seven management layers below the chief executive position.

To streamline internal projects, Khosrowshahi confirmed that Uber is merging its engineering, data science, and delivery units into combined development groups. The company is also consolidating its delivery operations, bringing restaurant, retail, and direct merchant services under unified leadership teams.

Along with job cuts, Uber is largely ending remote work options. Going forward, the company will allow less than 1 percent of its total workforce to work remotely, requiring almost all remaining employees to report directly to central offices.

In his staff message, Khosrowshahi explained that rapid company expansion created unnecessary organizational bloat. He noted that while building new services made Uber larger and stronger, that growth introduced extra management layers, fragmented project ownership, and slow coordination processes that no longer work at large scale.

Flattening corporate hierarchies allows major tech platforms to make engineering decisions faster. Eliminating extra management layers reduces internal review meetings, allowing product teams to build, test, and ship software updates without waiting weeks for corporate sign-offs.

Redirecting funds into autonomous vehicles highlights a major industry shift. As traditional ridesharing markets mature, companies face rising labor costs and driver shortages. Investing heavily in self-driving robotaxi networks helps operators secure long-term profit margins while lowering per-mile operational costs.

Ending remote work policies reflects a broader trend across Silicon Valley as tech firms push employees back into physical offices. Executive teams argue that in-person collaboration speeds up software development, though strict office mandates often lead to voluntary employee departures.

Trimming corporate headcount while doubling down on automated vehicle tech positions Uber to fight off rising competition in the autonomous transport market. Cutting management bureaucracy gives the company the financial flexibility required to build scale across automated transit networks.

Black Box Logic: OpenAI’s Opaque Recurrence Triggers Industry Safety Alarm

OpenAI’s new Astra model features a specialized reasoning method called recurrent depth, allowing the system to process complex tasks outside standard step-by-step logic chains.
