Financial Backstop: Nvidia Explores Cosigning Billions for Nscale’s Massive Data Center Buildout
Nvidia is discussing plans to back billions of dollars in debt financing for cloud infrastructure provider Nscale, helping secure capital for a massive data center site in West Virginia. Initial reporting from The Information and corroborated by Bloomberg confirms that Nvidia might act as a financial cosigner for the project. The buildout supports AI research lab Anthropic, which signed a $44.4 billion contract for the site’s first phase. Step-in agreements like this highlight how far chipmakers will go to keep expensive hardware deployments moving forward as investors grow nervous about high infrastructure costs.
Under the proposed financial structure, Nvidia would issue a residual value guarantee to cover construction and power setup expenses for the West Virginia facility. If Nscale defaults on its loans or misses construction milestone payments, Nvidia steps in to temporarily take control of the physical site, cover debt obligations, and source replacement tenants. Previous credit support initiatives by Nvidia primarily covered hardware lease guarantees and direct chip purchases, making a direct construction debt guarantee a major expansion of its corporate financing strategy.
The financial arrangements carry massive stakes for Nscale as the company prepares an initial public offering targeting a $35 billion market valuation. Nscale has faced repeated delays in executing ambitious infrastructure builds. The company operated roughly 25,000 advanced graphics processors in August, representing a small fraction of its 500,000 total chip deployment target. Additionally, construction at the West Virginia campus triggered local pushback after water runoff flooded nearby residential homes, though state regulators granted site certification in September following months of intense community negotiations.
Anthropic’s anchor contract covers an initial 460-megawatt computing facility designed to run Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin chips. Both companies are also discussing a second contract worth roughly $45 billion to equip an additional building on the campus. Securing anchor commitments from top AI developers helps Nscale attract lender interest, but project execution risks remain high across the sector. Demonstrating the volatility of cloud developments, Microsoft pulled out of a planned Nscale data center project in England after local power grid operators delayed grid connection timelines into the 2030s.
Nvidia continues to act as a primary financial engine for specialized cloud providers, delivering approximately $170 billion in investments and credit backing across the ecosystem. That total includes $1 billion in direct convertible debt financing committed to Nscale in September. Specialized cloud providers that rent out raw processing capacity without diversified core revenue streams face mounting financial pressure. Shares of rival infrastructure hosts CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN dropped over 30 percent in October, reflecting broader investor anxiety regarding debt-heavy hardware expansions.
Cosigning Nscale’s debt binds Nvidia even closer to Anthropic’s long-term hardware success. As one of the largest buyers of high-end computing power, Anthropic spreads its infrastructure spending across multiple chip suppliers to avoid single-vendor reliance. Nvidia’s willingness to guarantee Nscale’s debt ensures that key deployment sites stay on schedule, protecting demand for its flagship chips.
The financing talks occur as Anthropic faces its own capital questions. Recent regulatory filings show rapid operational expansion, but financial firm Blackstone warned investors that Anthropic could receive a junk credit rating post-IPO. A non-investment-grade rating raises borrowing costs, forcing AI labs to rely on deep-pocketed corporate partners like Nvidia to back heavy debt obligations.
