Laser Focus: How Inertia Plans to Turn a Massive Fusion Experiment into a Power Plant

Laser Focus: How Inertia Plans to Turn a Massive Fusion Experiment into a Power Plant

A fusion startup named Inertia Enterprises just made a huge move to bring clean energy to the world. They signed three major deals with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. This is the same lab in California that made history with the National Ignition Facility. Their goal is to take the laser based fusion technology built in that lab and turn it into something we can actually use to power our homes. This gives Inertia a massive head start over other startups trying to win the fusion race.

Inertia recently landed a $450 million investment, making it one of the most well funded startups in the energy industry. They are focusing on a specific type of fusion called inertial confinement. Most fusion projects use giant magnets to hold hot plasma in place. Inertia does the opposite. They use high powered lasers to compress a tiny fuel pellet until the atoms fuse together and release energy. It is a process that requires extreme precision and power.

The way it works at the lab is fascinating. They fire 192 laser beams into a tiny gold cylinder. Inside that cylinder is a fuel pellet coated in diamond. When the lasers hit the gold, it creates X-rays that vaporize the diamond and compress the fuel. This creates a tiny star for a fraction of a second. To actually produce power for the grid, this needs to happen several times every single second. That is the massive engineering challenge that Inertia is trying to solve.

The idea of using lasers for fusion has been around since the 1960s. It was originally a way to study nuclear weapons without actually setting them off. But scientists always knew it had potential for clean energy. It took 25 years just to build the facility in California, and it took even longer to reach the “breakeven” point where the reaction released more energy than the lasers put in. Now that the science is proven, the race is on to make it a business.

Inertia isn’t alone in this fight. Other companies like Xcimer and Focused Energy are also working on laser fusion. However, Inertia has a secret weapon. Their co-founder and chief scientist, Annie Kritcher, helped design the successful experiments at the lab. She is now working for both the lab and the startup at the same time. This close connection means Inertia can license over 200 patents and work directly with the people who know this tech better than anyone else.

The new deals will focus on building better lasers and improving the fuel targets. The lasers at the lab right now use older technology that isn’t very efficient. Inertia wants to build modern lasers that use less energy to start the reaction. This would make it much easier to turn a profit from a fusion power plant. If they can pull this off, they will unlock a source of energy that is virtually limitless and creates no carbon emissions. It is a bold plan to commercialize one of the most complex science experiments ever built.

Chasing Gigawatts: How Two Starlink Vets Are Weaponizing Solar and Batteries to Fuel the AI Boom

Two prominent SpaceX alumni have a wild proposal for tech hyperscalers, and it has absolutely nothing to do with rockets or deep space. Instead, they are building ground-based clean power plants right here on Earth. Their pitch is incredibly direct: they can deliver dependable, around-the-clock electricity much faster and cheaper than a traditional natural gas […]
