Mathematical Siege: OpenAI Claims 100 Solutions as Scholars Push Back Against AI Velocity

OpenAI announced a new independent advisory group hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Called the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, the panel gives academic mathematicians direct input regarding the company’s math-focused artificial intelligence research.

According to official updates, this new board serves as an intellectual bridge linking OpenAI to the broader academic public. The arrangement aims to give professional researchers a clear voice in how artificial intelligence tools move forward inside mathematical research.

The announcement arrived shortly after OpenAI published a controversial solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem. Alongside that publication, OpenAI stated that its internal reasoning model resolved over 100 additional open problems across major subfields of mathematics.

These rapid claims triggered immediate backlash from top mathematicians. Earlier this month, 25 Fields Medal winners signed an open letter warning that artificial intelligence labs threaten the integrity of mathematical work. The signatories argued that commercial tech firms are rushing to outdo each other by mass-producing solutions to famous historical problems without proper peer review.

OpenAI built its advisory panel to evaluate incoming results, assess their academic significance, and coordinate public announcements. While members do not receive compensation, they retain full control over their public statements, member selections, and unsolicited feedback, giving them independent standing.

However, the group lacks actual authority over internal corporate research schedules. OpenAI made it clear that the board will not have the power to slow down or redirect internal development. The group will not be responsible for setting the pace of ongoing mathematical projects.

The Institute for Advanced Study emphasized those same boundaries in its press release. While panel members can offer professional advice, final decision-making power rests entirely with corporate leadership.

The board consists of nine prominent mathematicians, including Camillo De Lellis from the Institute for Advanced Study. Notably, De Lellis was the only panel appointee who also signed the Fields Medalists’ open letter protesting rapid artificial intelligence claims.

While appointing independent scholars builds credibility, giving the board no real executive power leaves OpenAI in complete control of its deployment timeline. The company continues pushing ahead with automated problem-solving, leaving academic institutions to adapt as fast as they can.
